Mushroom Cultivation Basics for Filipino Growers
Oyster mushrooms thrive in the Philippine climate, making them an excellent choice for first-time growers. The warm, humid conditions that are typical across the country are naturally suited to mushroom cultivation.
Substrate Preparation
Rice straw is the most common and affordable substrate in the Philippines. It needs to be pasteurized by soaking in hot water (around 80°C) for 1–2 hours. Once cooled, it is packed into plastic bags and inoculated with spawn.
Fruiting Conditions
Oyster mushrooms need high humidity (80–90%), good air circulation, and indirect light. A simple growing house made from bamboo and plastic sheeting is a common setup. Mist the bags regularly to maintain humidity.
Harvest and Yield
Expect your first flush of mushrooms about 2–3 weeks after inoculation. Each bag can produce multiple flushes over several weeks. Harvest when the caps begin to flatten but before they curl upward.
