Introduction to Hydroponics for Small Spaces
Hydroponics allows you to grow plants without soil, using nutrient-rich water solutions instead. This makes it ideal for urban areas where land is limited, and it uses significantly less water than traditional farming.
Choosing a System
For beginners, the Kratky method is the simplest — it is a passive system with no pumps or electricity needed. You simply fill a container with nutrient solution and let the plant roots grow into it. Great for leafy greens like lettuce and kangkong.
Nutrients and pH
Hydroponic nutrients are available at most agricultural supply stores in the Philippines. Maintain pH between 5.5 and 6.5 for most leafy greens. A simple pH test kit is an inexpensive but essential tool.
Getting Started
Start small with a few net pots and a plastic container. Lettuce, pechay, and herbs like basil are excellent first crops. Once you are comfortable with the basics, you can scale up to larger systems like NFT or deep water culture.
